Welcome to the Edinburgh Electric Bike Tour! This is a shorter version of the Cycling Tour as this one is 90 minutes long.
What is an Electric Bike?
An electric bicycle, also known as an e-bike, is a bicycle with an integrated electric motor that can be used to help you ride the bike faster and up hills easier. E-bikes use rechargeable batteries and the lighter ones can travel 16 to 28 mph. You don’t need a license to ride an Electric Bike in Scotland.
Where will we go on the Edinburgh Electric Bike Tour?
The E-bike tour is a shorter version of the regular cycling tour.
The 90 minute Edinburgh Electric Bike Tour is one of our most popular tours! It avoids Edinburgh’s traffic and offers unbeatable, panoramic views across the city, countryside and sea. You’ll get to see all this without the pain of riding up Arthur’s seat in a regular bike.
You’ll get to see:
Blackfriars Street, Cowgate, Holyrood Palace, The Scottish Parliament, Dynamic Earth, The Scotsman Building, Holyrood Park, St Margaret’s Loch, St Anthony’s Chapel, Arthur’s Seat, Dr. Neil’s Garden, Duddingston Manse, Innocent Railway Cycle Path, Grassmarket.
You’ll get to park your bikes at the car park near Dunsapie Loch and climb to the top of Arthur’s Seat and back (optional). It’s not a long walk from Dunsapie Loch, you’ll be surprised how fast you’ll get to the top.
Should I be nervous about riding an Electric Bike?
Electric bikes are a new invention and like any new invention, people are nervous about trying them. At the start, electric bikes were heavy, didn’t work properly and were extremely expensive. Now, as technology has advanced, they are lightweight, always work and the price has come down dramatically.
So, why are electric bikes better for your trip to Edinburgh. There’s an easy answer: e-bikes take some of the disadvantages of a regular bike and demolish them.
What disadvantages do we mean? Edinburgh is a city on 7 hills. Not just little bumps, these are steep hills! Even the roads from the old town the the city above is a struggle to get up for most people! The fun part of riding a bike in Edinburgh is going down the hills.
On an Electric Bike, your bike ride in Edinburgh will be great fun as you get the excitement of going down the hills without worrying about the massive effort to get back up them!
The Edinburgh Bike Scene
For a long time, the bike riders in Edinburgh have been trying to push for a car free city centre. This would encourage even more tourism and make the city centre a more fun place to be. The only problem is, the actual daily cyclists in Edinburgh is very low, probably less than 5%. With this kind of daily cyclists, it will never go ahead any time soon.
As electric bikes evolve and become even cheaper, we should see the cycling percentage for Edinburgh residents increase. This, along with Just Eat’s new idea of having bikes everywhere, we could be closer to a car free city centre in the next 10 years. We’ll have to wait and see.
Another benefit of the electric bike is the time saved. It’s not just uphill that it helps with, you can also go downhill faster. From all this extra energy, you’ll get to your destination faster.
